On July 11, 2022, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson celebrated the 2nd Annual New York State Abolition Commemoration Day in partnership with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASLAH) at the Bronx County Building.

Gibson honored Reverend Gwendolyn Mayson-Tyson, Luciel Boles-Wilson, Bessie Jackson, Brenda Moreira, Dena Robins, Madge Allen, Patricia Williams, and two posthumous tributes to Susie W. Hampton and Dr. Williams Watkins, Jr. for their contribution to the preservation of African American history.

For Gibson, the first Black woman Bronx Borough President, this event is also an opportunity to educate the community about African Americans’ contribution to American history.
