Better Business Bureau reveals trending online scams and tips on how consumers can protect themselves

Better Business Bureau, a not-for-profit corporation helping consumers find businesses, brands and charities, was joined during a press conference on March 5, 2020 by federal, state and city agencies to reveal trending online scams and protective tips for National Consumer Protection Week.

The organization also revealed New York’s top ten consumer complaint categories for 2019, highlighting recent scams, consumer problems with businesses, and tips on how consumers can protect themselves online.

The top ten complaint categories for New York City for 2019 are:
1- Telecommunications
2- Financial Services
3- Health & Beauty
4- Online Retailer
5- Department Stores and Apparel
6- Automotive
7- Travel
8- Consumer Technology
9- Home Improvement & Construction
10- Professional and Business Services

Participating consumer protection and law enforcement agencies included: Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, U.S. Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, New York State Attorney General’s Office, New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection, New York State Department of Financial Services, New York City Department of Consumer & Worker Protection, and AARP.
