Africa: Male organ transplant recipient becomes a father

Africa-Afrique / Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – A man who made history by being the recipient of the world’s first male organ transplant has become a father.

The 21-year-old unidentified patient, who had his member amputated three years ago following life threatening complications caused by a traditional circumcision, has fathered a child with his girlfriend.

Prof. Andre van der Merwe from the University of Stellenbosch led a team which conducted the operation where a new member was fitted from a deceased donor.

The nine-hour operation resulted in the first successful transplant in the world with long-term results, after one previous attempt in China failed.

The ground-breaking operation was carried out in April, nearly 50 years after a team of Cape Town surgeons made medical history by successfully performing the world’s first human heart transplant.
