Tanzania earthquake causes death and damage

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on Saturday hit Bukoba region in Tanzania killing at least 10 people and injuring about 200.

The earthquake had a depth of 10 km, covering an area of 42 kilometres north west of Bukoba, an area with a population of 70,000 people, according to data availed by the US Geological Survey.

Many buildings were damaged in Bukoba and neighbouring Kampala, the Ugandan capital, but no major damages to buildings were reported in parts of Kenya, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake was felt across 191 km southwest of Tanzania.

Tremors were felt across the Lake Victoria region, covering western Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley region.

“Lake Victoria region is not prone to the seismic waves. The damage would have been much bigger if it was in an area prone to seismic activity and waves like some Asian countries,” said Vincent Okoth, a student of environmental studies at the Kenya Technical University.

The incident happened a day after the Kenya Meteorological Department carried out an emergency drill on tsunami preparedness.
