Lomé, Togo (PANA) – The Togolese music group, Toofan, was received triumphantly in Lomé on its return from Durban, South Africa, where it won the MTV Music Awards in the category “Best francophone artist”.
“It is as if we have just won the football World Cup,” said Master Just, a member of the group.
For Barabas, also member of the group, « we are the first francophone to win that prize and we are writting a new history for the Togolese music ».
A crowd of fans and curious onlookers welcomed the group which is taking giant steps in the world of music.
The secretary general of the Togolese Culture ministry, Tossi Tinaka, who was also part of the reception, promised a huge ceremony to celebrate the award.
During the MTV Music Awards in Durban, Toofan lifted the prize after beating groups like the Ivorian famous group, Espoir 2000, Arielle T (Gabon), Ferre Gola (DRC) and Youssoupha (Congo) in the category of Best francophone artist.
Toofan was also nominated in the category “best international artist” at the BET Awards, whose grand final is due for 29 June at Nokia Theatre of Los Angeles, US.
In the US, Toofan will compete against with Davido and Tiwa Savage from Nigeria, Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania and Mafikozolo from South Africa.
