Providing a free meal to the Harlem community is a tradition that started 62 years ago with the queen of soul food herself, Sylvia Woods.

Whether you are a Harlemite or not, you can enjoy a free hot plate of grits, chicken, and biscuits every August 1st.

Sylvia Woods founded Sylvia’s Restaurant in 1962 in Harlem with her husband, Herbert Woods.

Since her passing in 2012, her children, grandchildren, and members of the community have continued to carry on her legacy.
