Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – George Luca, who was accused of one of South Africa’s most high-profile murders, has been extradited back to the country after several years on the run.
Luca, who fled from South Africa shortly after the killing of strip club boss Lolly Jackson, landed in Johannesburg on Sunday under police escort.
“A team comprising South African Police Services Crime Intelligence, the Interpol Extradition Team and the Department of Justice has successfully repatriated George Luca from Cyprus,” said police spokesperson Lt.-Gen. Solomon Makgale.
Luca fled to his hometown in Limassol, Cyprus, shortly after Jackson’s murder at a house in Johannesburg in May 2010.
He had allegedly called the police to confess to the crime, hours after Jackson’s bullet-riddled body was discovered.
Jackson, who made millions of dollars in South Africa’s sleazy underworld, was shot 16 times.
In March 2012, Luca was arrested by the local police in Cyprus, after being on the run for two years.
The extradition process to bring him back to South Africa began thereafter.
He made several attempts to evade extradition but he failed when he lost his final appeal last year in the Cypriot Supreme Court.
He is expected to appear in a Johannesburg court this week.
