Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The South African government confirmed on Monday that it will appeal the recent North Gauteng High Court ruling over Sudanese President Omar Bashir.
“The reasons for the appeal will be contained in the affidavit that will be submitted within the prescribed due date,” said government spokesperson Phumla Williams.
The court two weeks ago ruled that the failure of the authorities to detain Bashir, the International Criminal Court (ICC) fugitive when he was in South Africa attending the African Union Summit was inconsistent with the Constitution, and he must be detained pending a formal request from the ICC.
