Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The provisional assessment of former South African President Nelson Mandela’s estate has put its worth at about US$4.6 million, according to Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke.
Moseneke, who read out the will at a media briefing in Johannesburg Monday, said the global icon’s estate includes a two-story house in the upmarket Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where he died in December, a modest home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where he is buried and his famous autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom”.
He noted that Mandela left US$5,000 each to several of his personal staff members, including Zelda la Grange who nursed him for several years.
Other beneficiaries listed in the will included his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mandela also left donations to Wits University, where he was educated in the 1950s, as well as Qunu Secondary School and Orlando West High School in Soweto.
Mandela died on 5 Dec. 2013 at the age of 95 and was buried 10 days later in his native Qunu.
