South Africa’s opposition party, Democratic Alliance (DA) on Sunday said its former leader Helen Zille will face disciplinary charges for her social media remarks on colonialism.
Zille sparked an outcry over a tweet condoning colonialism two weeks ago.
“For those claiming legacy of colonialism was only negative, think of our independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water etc,” she wrote.
She later apologised but the incident sparked a massive outcry and there are growing calls for her to be fired.
Addressing a media briefing in Cape Town, DA leader Mmusi Maimane confirmed that the party’s federal executive made the decision, noting however that, it has “not been easy to take”.
Maimane said Zille would face charges of violating the party’s constitution by acting in a manner that brought the party into disrepute, but said: “She would remain in her post as premier during the disciplinary process.”
“My job as the leader of the DA is to grow our party and advance our project of building a non-racial, prosperous democracy. Nothing is more important that this project, and no one is bigger than it.
“I must protect this project, and cannot tolerate any action or behaviour by any person which undermines or harms it. It is my belief that Helen Zille’s assertions did just that, and therefore require action,” he stated.
Zille is a former journalist who exposed the truth behind the death of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko in the late 1970s.
She also worked with the Black Sash and other anti-apartheid groups in the 1980s. She was also the former Mayor of Cape Town.
Two years ago, DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard was disciplined by the party after she shared a Facebook post saluting apartheid-era President P. W. Botha.

Le parti d’opposition sud-africain Alliance Démocratique (DA), a déclaré dimanche que son ancien chef Helen Zille devra faire face à des mesures disciplinaires pour ses commentaires sur le colonialisme dans les médias sociaux.
Zille a suscité un tollé pour un tweet cautionnant le colonialisme il y a deux semaines.
“A ceux qui affirment que l’héritage du colonialisme n’a été que négatif, pensez à l’indépendance de notre système judiciaire, aux infrastructures de transport, aux canalisations etc », elle avait écrit.
Elle présentera plus tard ses excuses mais l’incident avait déjà suscité un énorme tollé général et il y a de plus en plus de demandes pour qu’elle soit congédiée.
Lors d’un point de presse à Cape Town, le leader de AD Mmusi Maimane a confirmé que le parti avait pris une décision, notant toutefois qu’elle n’avait “pas été facile à prendre”.
Maimane a déclaré que Zille est accusé d’avoir violé la constitution du parti en agissant de manière à discréditer le parti, mais a déclaré qu’”elle maintenait son poste au cours de la procédure disciplinaire.”
“Mon travail en tant que leader de AD est de faire croître notre parti et de faire avancer notre projet de construction d’une démocratie non-raciale et prospère. Rien n’est plus important que ce projet, et personne n’est au dessus de ce projet.
“Je dois protéger ce projet, et ne peut tolérer aucune action ou comportement qui pourrait l’entraver ou le nuire. C’est ma conviction que les affirmations de Helen Zille ont fait exactement cela, et nécessitent par conséquent une action”, a-t-il déclaré.
Zille est une ancienne journaliste qui avait révélé la vérité derrière la mort de Steve Biko, le leader de la Conscience Noire à la fin des années 1970.
Elle a également travaillé avec le Sash Noir et d’autres groupes anti-apartheid dans les années 1980. Elle était aussi l’ancien maire de Cape Town.
Il y a deux ans, Dianne Kohler Barnard avait été sanctionnée par le parti pour avoir partagé un post Facebook célébrant l’apartheid sous Président P. W. Botha.
