Somalia inaugurated its ninth President in a historic transition last week, setting a new pace for the fledgling government which has been fighting extremists to restore peace and stability in a country affected by years of civil conflict.
Somalia’s newly-elected President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by East African regional leaders and representatives of foreign governments.
President Mohamed emerged victorious after two rounds of voting in Parliament, defeating the incumbent, who emerged the winner of the first round of elections.
President Mohamed “Farmajo” pledged to focus on security, peace and reconciliation. He also pledged to deal with the migration of Somalis to other foreign nations in his inaugural speech.
The new Somali President, a former Prime Minister who was forced out following the signing of the so-called Kampala accord on the political transition in Somalia, is largely praised for managing the country’s security affairs, leading to the government’s biggest victory against the Al Shabaab.
During his tenure, the Somali government successfully battled the Al Shabaab and dislodged the militants from, Mogadishu, the capital.
During his campaign, Farmajo pledged to negotiate with the Al Shabaab, but vowed war if the group was unwilling to negotiate with the government.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Djibouti President Omer Guelleh and the Kenyan President.

La cérémonie d’installation du nouveau président somalien, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed dit ”Farmajo” a pris fin mercredi après-midi à Mogadiscio.
Plus de 120 délégations représentant des pays et des organisations du monde ont pris part à la cérémonie, rehaussée par la présence des présidents djiboutien et kenyan, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh et Uhuru Kenyatta et le Premier ministre éthiopien, Haile Mariam Dessalegh, ainsi que le vice-président du Soudan.
Le nouveau président somalien, cité par la télévision somalienne, a affirmé que son gouvernement accordera une grande importance à la résolution des problèmes sécuritaires et humanitaires auxquels le pays est confronté.
Il a mis un accent particulier sur le parachèvement de la réconciliation nationale et la réforme du système judiciaire, réaffirmant la primauté du droit et le développement économique.
Mr. ”Farmajo” a indiqué que son gouvernement va renforcer la politique étrangère de son pays basée sur la coopération et le respect mutuel.
