On March 4, 2021, Senegalese New Yorkers held a rally at the United Nations to demand the release of Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was arrested the day before on his way to a court appearance.
The protesters walked up and down First Ave in Manhattan holding signs reading, “I’m Ousmane Sonko,” “Don’t touch Sonko,” “Macky dictator,” or “Democracy falls apart under Macky Sall’s regime.” They also sang and shouted, “Macky got to go!”
The pro-democracy protest was one of many protests held in Senegal and in the Senegalese diaspora calling for the respect of democracy and human rights.
