Brussels, Belgium ( PANA) – Senegal and the European Union have reached a new fisheries agreement, eight years after the expiry of the previous protocol, according to a statement, on Monday, in Brussels.
According to the statement of the European Commission, it took three rounds of negotiations to reach the new 5-year agreement.
The new instrument allows 38 vessels of the EU to once again operate in Senegal’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), subject to a compensation of 8.69 million Euros over 5 years.
The statement said the agreement was in strict compliance with the principles of sustainability and good governance and would enable Senegalese artisanal fisheries to receive 750,000 euros per year.
