You might have seen a glimpse of the West African country Senegal in Anthony Bourdain’s TV show “Parts Unknown” or in Andre Zimmern’s series “Bizarre Foods” and been mesmerized by its beauty, wondering when the opportunity to visit Senegal would come.

But don’t worry! Senegal is coming to you!

A group of young Senegalese-Americans, all very proud of their cultural heritage, are hosting the first edition of Senegal Day in Harlem, a three-day event exploring Senegalese culture from top to bottom – from food, to fashion, music and dance.

The celebration will kick off on Friday, August 12, in East Harlem with an opening ceremony and a panel discussion around the theme: “Teranga,” which means hospitality in Wolof, one of Senegal’s national languages.

The kickoff event will be followed in the evening by a gala dinner, award presentation and fashion show with Senegalese designers Heritage Couture, Partenaire Couture, Moussa Versailles, Nabou David and Infos Boutique.

Senegalese singers Backa Niang, Supa Ced, Oumar NDiaye, Fata and Pape Diouf will entertain the guests during the gala.

On Saturday, August 13, after a day of networking, participants will put their dancing skills to the test during a Sabar night with percussionist Mar Gueye et le Nguewel Ngui before heading to the after party.

On Sunday August 14, a BBQ coupled with recreational activities such as soccer, volleyball, “Lamb” (Senegalese Wrestling) will bring to a close the festivities.
