Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) – Leaders of Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya will meet in Kampala, Uganda, Thursday in a mini-summit on security in the sub-region, during which they are expected to sign a military cooperation agreement, official sources announced Tuesday.
The coordinator of Rwanda’s regional integration projects at the East African Community (EAC), Mrs. Monique Mukaruliza, said that the agreement is designed to strengthen security and partnership in the fight against terrorism, trans-border criminality and other security threats in the sub-region.
Addressing the press, Mrs. Mukaruliza said that the three leaders will also look at the state of progress of other common projects underway.
The projects include the construction of the “Northern corridor” which will link the port of Mombasa and countries from eastern and central Africa.
On completion, the corridor will pass through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan, as well as the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In line with the meeting, Uganda will present a report on the development of railway in the sub-region, as well as the state of advancement in the opening of an oil refinery and a political federation.
During the last summit, held in Kigali in 2013, the heads of State signed an agreement with a view to facilitate the free movement of people and goods in the region.
Since then, Rwandan, Ugandan or Kenyan citizens traveling to any of the three countries only needed to present their identity cards as travel papers. These have replaced their passport and passes.
