Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) – Putting on a three-hour military parade, the Rwandan government on Friday celebrated 20 years of Rwanda liberation, which marked the end of genocide by the rebel movement of the Rwandan patriotic front (FPR) on 4 July, 1994.
Three African presidents — Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Yoweli Museveni of Uganda and Salva Kiir of South Sudan — attended the huge military parade held at the big Amahoro (Peace) stadium of Kigali.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rwandan president Paul Kagame said that the liberation is not only a military victory, adding “Rwanda has decided to make of the fight against division its battle, and there is also the need to transmit that heritage to the future generations.”
The ceremony marks the total victory of the former rebellion of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR) which seized power in 1994 after ousting the genocide regime accused of planning and perpetrating the Tutsi genocide in the central African country.
