Gambian President Adama Barrow’s nominee, Mariama Diack Denton, was elected Speaker of the 58-member national assembly in the tiny West African nation Tuesday.
Denton, a lawyer, and four others were nominated by the President after the April 6, Parliamentary elections.
Denton replaced Abdoulie Bojang whose’s mandate expired ahead of the elections.
In her acceptance speech, the new Gambian Speaker expressed gratitude to President Barrow for nominating her to the National Assembly and commended members for electing her as Speaker in the New Gambia parliament.
“I will do my best to live up to expectations. I shall at all times endeavor to uphold the provisions of the Constitution and the Standing Order of the National Assembly in the performance of my duties as Speaker. I will be impartial as expected and maintain the dignity of the office. I look forward to working with all sides of the Assembly and ensure that the welfare of the people is the priority,” she said.
Denton is Gambia’s first female lawyer. She was arrested and detained shortly after the alleged coup by the then chief of The Gambia Armed Forces, Ndure Cham, in March 2006.
Mariam’s father, Sir Alieu S. Jack, was the first speaker of the legislative council/parliament from 1962-1972.
Meanwhile, President Barrow, acting under the provisions of Sections 71(1) and 71(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, has appointed Mr. Fafa Sanyang minister of Petroleum and Energy.

Mariama Diack Denton, la candidate du président gambien Adama Barrow, a été élue présidente de l’assemblée nationale de 58 membres dans la petite nation de l’Afrique de l’Ouest mardi.
Denton, un avocat, ainsi que quatre autres personnes ont été nommés par le Président après les élections législatives du 6 avril.
Denton a remplacé Abdoulie Bojang dont le mandat a expiré avant les élections.
Dans son discours d’acceptation, la nouvelle présidente de l’assemblée nationale gambienne a exprimé sa gratitude au Président Barrow pour l’avoir nommée à l’Assemblée nationale et a remercié les députés pour l’avoir élue comme présidente du nouveau parlement gambien.
“Je ferai de mon mieux pour répondre aux attentes. Je tiens à toujours respecter les dispositions de la Constitution et l’ordre permanent de l’Assemblée nationale dans l’exercice de mes fonctions de présidente. Je serai impartiale comme prévu et je maintiendrai la dignité du bureau. J’ai hâte de travailler avec tous les partis de l’Assemblée et de veiller à ce que le bien-être du peuple soit la priorité “, a-t-elle déclaré.
Denton est la première femme à être avocate en Gambie. Elle a été arrêtée et détenue peu de temps après le prétendu coup d’état par le chef des forces armées de Gambie, Ndure Cham, en mars 2006.
Le père de Mariam, Sir Alieu S. Jack, a été le premier président du conseil législatif / parlement de 1962-1972.
Pendant ce temps, le président Barrow, agissant en vertu des dispositions des articles 71 (1) et 71 (3) de la Constitution de la République de Gambie, a nommé M. Fafa Sanyang, ministre du Pétrole et de l’Énergie.
