Nigerians to hold talks on nation-building, investments in Washington DC

The role of Nigerian professionals in Diaspora in nation-building and investments in Nigeria, will form part of an interactive session on August 6, in Washington DC, US, to commemorate 25 years anniversary of a US-based Nigerian socio-cultural organization, Zumunta Association USA.

Zumunta Association USA, is the umbrella cultural group of Nigerians from the country’s 19 Northern states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, residing in different parts of the US.

A statement by the chairman of the 25 anniversary celebrations and annual convention, Mr. Aliyu Mustapha, said the Wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, Governors from the northern states of Bauchi, Adamawa, Niger, Kano, Sokoto, Borno and Yobe, as well as top businessmen, including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, Mohammed Indimi and Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma are to speak on collaborative strategies between Nigerians in Diaspora and those at home.

He said that areas of investments to be discussed for potential businesses between Nigerians in Diaspora and their compatriots include arts and crafts, agriculture, solid minerals, tourism and skills acquisitions.

Mr. Mustapha said the event would also feature an international exhibition to promote “Made-in-Nigeria” goods and services, and the re-launch of the association’s flagship scholarship program for students in Nigerian universities, through which it has for more than 20 years sponsored dozens of students from northern Nigeria, to undertake technical and vocational studies in the universities.

“Zumunta is concerned about our welfare here in America and the state of affairs in Nigeria and we are coming together through the anniversary celebration and the convention to find ways and means of improving ourselves and of contributing to the development of our country, Nigeria, and our respective host communities. It is our conviction that in unity lies strength,” he noted.

Also, Nigeria’s rich musical heritage and cultural dances, will be on full display at a Gala Night, with performances by US-based Nigerian groups and other artistes from Nigeria,” Mr. Mustapha added.

Zumunta Association USA was founded in 1991 in US Tri-State area comprising of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, to foster goodwill through social and cultural interactions among Nigerians of Northern descent. It is currently made up of 12 chapters in 12 American cities.

It also focuses its activities in the areas of health, education, youth development and women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
