Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) – Nigeria’s secret police barred, on Saturday night, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, from traveling abroad, saying it was acting on instructions from above.
Mr. Sanusi, who was suspended from office by President Goodluck Jonathan on February 20, 2014, over alleged financial recklessness, was not allowed to board his Turkish Airlines’ flight to Istanbul en route Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj.
Officials of the State Security Service (SSS) impounded Mr. Sanusi’s passport as he was about to board the flight at the Aminu Kano International Airport in the northern city of Kano.
The SSS action came despite a subsisting court ruling restraining the agency and the Nigeria police from harassing Mr. Sanusi or seizing his passport.
Mr. Sanusi’s suspension generated a huge debate because it came shortly after he blew the whistle on the non-remittance of US$20 billion oil revenue by the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to the appropriate authorities.
