Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) – Nigerians in the Diaspora have remitted about US$21.5 billion to their homeland in the past two years, a contribution that was only surpassed by revenue from oil, according to chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Organization (NIDO), America Board of Directors, Gabe Okoye.
Okoye was quoted in Monday’s edition of the local Vanguard newspaper as calling on the Nigerian government to urgently set up the Diaspora Commission to serve as a medium for the seamless interface between those in the Diaspora and their native land.
The Commission will also serve as the vehicle through which the Nigeria Diaspora Community can channel their vast resources to Nigeria for the development of the country.
The creation of the Diaspora Commission was part of the resolution passed during the just concluded National Conference.
