Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) – The leader of the ongoing protest seeking government action to rescue the over 200 abducted school girls was arrested and detained by the police today, according to the Premium Times newspaper.

The police reportedly picked up Mrs. Naomi Mutah Nyadar from her home in the capital city of Abuja and took her to the Asokoro police station, where she was detained.

“We believe it is in connection with the protests she is leading,” her lawyer, Samuel Ogala, was quoted as saying.

Mrs. Nyadar is behind the #BringBackOurGirls protest at the Unity Fountain, less than 200 meters away from the Transcorp Hilton where the three-day World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa will start on Wednesday.

Efforts to confirm the arrest from the police have not yielded positive results.

On Sunday, in his first public comments on the abduction of the girls from their school in Northern Chibok 20 days ago, President Goodluck Jonathan praised the protesters, both within and outside the country, for putting the issue in the front burner.

He, however, said the government did not yet know where the girls have been taken, even as he vowed that they would be rescued.
