The Michelle Obama Community Democratic Club led by District Leader and City Council District 9 candidate Cordell Cleare and Valerie Jo Bradley, celebrated the life and legacy of Black nationalist Malcolm X with a day of service at the Malcom Shabazz Plaza on 110th Street and Lenox.
The day began with a community clean-up and planting at the plaza followed by a Read-A-Thon featuring excerpts of Malcom X’s speeches, letters and writings.
Several community members graced the stage, including: NY County leader Keith Wright; District Leader Wilma Brown; Vice President of Community Affairs at L+M Development Partners and C+C Apartment Management Yasmin Cornelius; City Council District 9 candidate William Allen; Harlem youth from Street Corner Resources Jibreel; Harlem poet Noah; Harlem Heritage Tours founder Neal Shoemaker; City Council District 9 candidate Athena Moore and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.
A. Peter Bailey, author and co-founder of the Organization of Afro-American Unity was the keynote speaker of the event.
The organizers received a citation from Assembly woman Inez Dickens’ office and Dr. John Satchmo Mannan and his Jazz Renaissance Band entertained the crowd in between speeches.
