Bamako, Mali (PANA) – Mrs Mariam Travélé, wife of Mali’s first President Modibo Keita, died Monday evening at the age of 94, the public radio announced.
Mariam stood side by side with her husband during the challenges he faced under French colonisation, as well as during the travails he faced after he was ousted in a military coup and jailed for 10 years.
After the advent of democracy in Mali in 1991, Mariam was elected vice president of the political party USRDA, which later became UM-RDA.
She withdrew from public life several years ago due to her advanced age.
