Libya: US embassy stops issuing visa to Libyans

The US embassy in Libya has suspended the issuing of visas to Libyan citizens who want to travel to the United States following President Donald Trump’s executive order last Friday, which temporarily bans nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Libya, from entering the US.

In a communiqué issued on its website on Monday evening, the US embassy in Libya said that “by virtue of the executive order signed on 27 January 2017 related to the protection of the nation against terrorist attacks by foreigners, the issuing of visas to Iraqi, Iranian, Libyan, Somali, Sudanese, Syrian and Yemeni citizens has been suspended”.

The embassy said that the decision “comes into force immediately and until further notice” and called on Libyans not to ask for an appointment for visas or pay special visa fees for the time being.

The US diplomatic mission asked those who have previous appointments with the embassy not to confirm them because access to the embassy or consulate would be refused to them.

It said it would announce any further actions affecting travelers to the United States in case new information was available.
