Botswana’s software development company Intellegere Media has developed a collection of mobile applications to share and tell the cultural history of each ethnic community in the country.
Itumeleng Garebatshabe, Intellegere Holdings founder and CEO said the applications, dubbed Heritage Series Apps, were making learning about culture much easier.
Garebatshabe said the mobile applications leverage on the high mobile penetration.
“Intellegere Media was able to partner with historian Dr Jeff Ramsay and collate information about Botswana tribes. The information was then packaged into the Botswana Heritage Series app,” he said.
So far, the Heritage Series App has packaged free apps available on Android and Windows phones, the Google store while an iOS version for Apple is on the pipeline for BaNgwaketse, BaKgatla baga Mmanaana, BaKalanga and BaSubia communities.
Garebatshabe said the apps help preserve culture for the future generations to know history and heritage.
“We want to share our Setswana heritage with the world because there isn’t enough digital information about the Botswana people readily available,” Garebatshabe said.
Intellegere Media said the Heritage Series Apps would close the information gap about Botswana history as the information published is mainly available in books.
Statistics indicate the Heritage Series Apps has been downloaded worldwide, with the most popular downloads coming from Botswana, South Africa, Canada and Zimbabwe.
