Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – Floods caused by torrential rains which lashed the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, late on Sunday have left over 60 people dead and made 10,000 homeless according to the Red Cross.
Access to the flooded zones was difficult Tuesday while rescue operations are being intensified to find the bodies of those who are still missing, the Spokesman of the Red Cross in Burundi, Alexis Manirakiza, said.
Those who were rendered homeless by the flooding rains have been provided a temporary shelter by the Red Cross at a sports ground in the North of Bujumbura, the nation’s capital.
Meanwhile, the government has buried those who died in the weather disaster, in addition to footing the medical bills of those who were hospitalized.
The government has also launched an international appeal for assistance to the victims of the disaster.
