Gambia: Large crowds welcome Gambian President Adama Barrow back home

Gambia’s president Adama Barrow arrived back home on Thursday from Dakar, Senegal, to a tumultuous welcome following the departure into exile of former president Yahya Jammeh last Saturday.

Thousands of jubilant Gambians, wearing T-shirts with the photograph of President Barrow and the inscription “Gambia has decided”, thronged Banjul Airport to welcome him. They also waved miniature flags of Gambia, a popular tourist destination, drumming and dancing to welcome home their president as they can now breathe the air of freedom.

President Barrow, 51, arrived on board a Senegalese plane. He was seen off in Dakar by Senegalese President Macky Sall.

President Barrow was sworn into office last Thursday in the Gambian embassy in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

President Barrow won the December 1st election that ended Jammeh’s 22-year.
