Gambia: Adama Barrow sworn in Dakar

Gambia’s president-elect Adama Barrow was on Thursday sworn in as the West African country’s third president.

He took the oath of office in Gambia’s Embassy in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, because Yahaya Jammeh, the incumbent whom he beat in the December 1, election, has refused to concede defeat and leave office.

The ceremony was attended by western ambassadors to Senegal, the UN envoy for West Africa and top officials from the Economic Community of West African States.

Dressed in white, Adama Barrow took the oath of office pledging to protect and defend the constitution.

He asked Gambian soldiers to remain in their barracks. He said he hopes to return to Banjul soon.
