Evander Holyfield, the legendary five-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, will hold an exhibition boxing match with Nigerian politician Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May.
The bout will take place in Lagos on May 25, at the Eko Atlantic City and would be beamed live worldwide, according to organizers.
The former governor of Lagos and leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu, will spar Holyfield in the bout to be refereed by the Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.
The private sector-initiated event is designed as a contribution to the 50th anniversary celebration of the creation of Lagos State under the ongoing project, Lagos@50, chaired by Professor Soyinka.
Significantly, it is aimed at bringing the world’s attention to some health-related issues in Africa, and will focus on cases such as Autism in Children, Breast Cancer, Mental illness, HIV/AIDS, River Blindness, and the plight of Africans living with Disabilities.
According to the organizers, the event will donate five 40-foot containers of medical and relief materials worth over US$2 million to Lagos State Government and other neighbouring states.
Part of the proceeds from the event will benefit not-for-profit organizations and agencies in Lagos, which cater to, and are engaged in research programs aimed at eradicating these medical conditions.
The event is promoted by ACI Entertainment and Bishop Entertainment Consult based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Le légendaire Evander Holyfield, cinq fois champion du monde de boxe poids lourd, tiendra un combat de démonstration avec l’homme politique nigérian Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu en mai.
Le combat aura lieu à Lagos le 25 mai, à Eko Atlantic City et sera diffusé en direct dans le monde entier, selon les organisateurs.
L’ancien gouverneur de Lagos et chef du parti au pouvoir All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu, va affronter Holyfield dans un combat arbitré par le prix Nobel, le Professeur Wole Soyinka.
L’événement initié par le secteur privé est conçu comme une contribution à la célébration du 50e anniversaire de la création de l’état de Lagos dans le projet en cours, Lagos@50, présidée par le professeur Soyinka.
De manière significative, il a pour but d’attirer l’attention sur certaines questions liées à la santé en Afrique, et mettra l’accent sur des cas tels que l’autisme chez les enfants, le cancer, la maladie mentale, le VIH/SIDA, la cécité, et le sort des Africains vivant avec une déficience.
Selon les organisateurs, l’événement fera un don de cinq conteneurs de 40 pieds de matériel médical et du matériel de secours d’une valeur supérieure à 2 millions de dollars à l’état de Lagos et autres états voisins.
Une partie des recettes de l’événement bénéficiera aux organismes à but non lucratif à Lagos, qui pourvoient aux besoins, et sont engagés dans des programmes de recherche visant à éradiquer ces maladies.
