On June 14, 2016, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito gave a speech detailing the economic impacts of Donald Trump’s deportation and Muslim ban policies on New York City at the Association for a Better New York event in Manhattan.
With Donald Trump as the presumptive nominee, the Speaker commissioned an analysis on just how these policies would affect New York’s economy.
Select findings from the Council analysis:
+If the estimated number of undocumented immigrants living in New York City were deported, New York City would lose almost $800 million in tax revenue.
+ The City would see employment decline by over 340,000 jobs – surpassing both the 2001 and 2008 recessions.
+ There are almost 263,000 New Yorkers who come from nations where at least 50% of the population is Muslim.
+ Workers in New York City who were born in Muslim-majority countries contribute $14.2 billion annually to our local economy.
