Cameroonian Designer Kibonen Unveils “Bimbia II” During New York Fashion Week

Kibonen made her highly anticipated return to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) on September 11, 2024, unveiling her latest collection, “Bimbia II”, at the Chelsea Factory, in Manhattan.

The collection, initiated by the African Fashion Council and powered by the Creative Africa Nexus – Afreximbank, showcased Kibonen’s commitment to blending traditional African artistry with contemporary fashion.

Through Bimbia II, Kibonen illuminates multifaceted histories, acknowledging their profound impact on contemporary African identity and culture. Rooted in the spirit of Sankofa—which encourages learning from the past to build a brighter future—the collection explores the often-overlooked history of the African slave trade, particularly slavery within Africa by Africans, and highlights the wealth and riches that existed in Africa before colonialism.

The collection pays homage to pre-colonial African civilizations like Mali, Ghana, and Great Zimbabwe, while spotlighting Bimbia, a historical slave port in Cameroon. It also features high-vibration fabrics that carry the energy, authenticity, and spiritual resonance needed to honor cultural heritage.

As a leader within the African Fashion Council (AFC), Kibonen shares her knowledge and experience to uplift African fashion. She draws inspiration from traditional Cameroonian garments, West African fabrics, New York’s vibrant fashion scene, and African stories. In her role with the AFC, she remains dedicated to promoting African designers and brands on the global stage.
