On June 16, 2022, a few minutes before 3 p.m., the blue, red, and white Juneteenth Flag was floating at the Bronx County courthouse for the first time following a flag-raising ceremony held by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and deputy Borough president Janet A. Peguero.
The flag-raising ceremony commemorated the liberation of enslaved Africans in Texas two years after President Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation freeing “all persons held as slaves.”
