African community to host 4th annual United States Conference on African Immigrant and Refugee Health in September

The African immigrant and refugee communities, partners and stakeholders, in collaboration with the Office of Minority Health (Department of Health and Human Services) will host its 4th annual United States Conference on African Immigrant and Refugee Health (USCAIH 2016) under the theme Social Determinants of African Immigrant and Refugee Health: Rethinking Integration, Challenges and Empowerment.

The conference will take place from September 15, through September 18, 2016 at the New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott, located at 102-05 Ditmars Boulevard, East Elmhurst.

The objective of the conference is to describe current trends in African immigrant health, including disparities in infectious, chronic diseases, mental/behavioral health outcomes and use of healthcare services, identify gaps in available data and research on African immigrant health, and finally showcase best practices in developing and implementing culturally appropriate and evidence-based programs for African immigrant and refugee communities.

Topics to be addressed include the prevalence and determinants of infectious/chronic diseases, behavioral/mental health, role of immigration, integration, religion and culture in health outcomes, research, best practices, and health interventions African immigrant and refugee communities.

USCAIH 2016 will offer a multi-disciplinary platform, grounded in the determinants of health framework, to further understand the underpinning obstacles that stand in the way of optimal health in African immigrant and refugee communities in the United States. Building on the successes of previous USCAIH conferences, USCAIH 2016 will bring together members of the community, health researchers, academics, public health workers, advocates, provider and community organizers to shed light on, enhance and advance the body of scholarship, best-practices and expertise in the increasingly complex field of African immigrant and refugee health.
