The Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union to the United Nations celebrated on May 23, 2014, in New York, Africa Day, the annual commemoration of the founding in 1963 of the Organization of African Unity, which became in 2002, the African Union.
The celebration started at the United Nations headquarters with a panel discussion on transforming Africa’s agriculture featuring the professor of the Practice of International Development and author of The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa, Prof. Calestous Juma, as keynote speaker.
The festivities continued later in the evening at the Hammerstein Ballroom where guests enjoyed an African culinary buffet with more than sixty dishes, and cultural performances by master Kora player Yacouba Sissokho, Kongo Culture-Drmmers, Razia Said, King Napoleon, Salah, Ruart Music Group and Dj Nile.
H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations along with several African diplomats, attended the event emceed by former Miss Universe, Mpule K. Kwelagobe.
