The New York Department of Education published the 2017 New York City High School Directory two weeks earlier than last year to allow families to begin their high school search earlier.
For the first time, the directory published in English was translated into the DOE’s nine languages on the same day. Last year, the directory was published in English on June 10 and published in translation on June 20.
These changes are designed to ensure information gets to students and families earlier than ever before, in their home language. In addition to the directory being available online, hard copies will be delivered to all public middle schools by the end of the school year.
The 2017 High School Directory is also nearly 10 percent shorter than last year’s, with 10 million fewer pages printed for hard copies. In particular, the “Introduction” section has been updated and streamlined – it includes new, clear checklists that lay out the important steps in the high school admissions process, as well as new student activities that will help them identify and select schools to apply to.
The directory also includes new “borough summary” infographics about high school options in each borough, redesigned pages for each high school based on parent surveys that better communicate their offerings and selection criteria, and new information on high school seats for students with disabilities.
Summer Family Workshops on the high school admissions process begin in July, and families are encouraged to attend. Families can learn more about High School Admissions at nyc.gov/schools/high and request email updates at http://schools.nyc.gov/Subscribe/default.htm.
