14th IAAF World Championships: Seven African nations win medals

Lagos, Nigeria – Seven African nations have registered their presence on the medals table at the 14th IAAF World Athletics Championships billed to round off Sunday (18Aug) in Moscow, Russia.

Quoting details provided by the sport’s governing body, International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), PANA listed the countries are Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Botswana and Djibouti.

Kenya leads the African pack and is fourth overall with three gold, four silver and three bronze medals; followed by Ethiopia – which is fifth overall – with three gold, three silver and four bronze medals

Uganda is third in Africa and 11th overall with one gold; Ivory Coast is fourth in Africa and 19th overall with two silver while Nigeria is fifth in Africa and 22nd overall with two silver medals.

Botswana is sixth in Africa and 25th overall with one silver while Djibouti is seventh in Africa and 33rd overall with one bronze

Overall, host Russia leads with seven gold, three silver and five bronze, followed by the US with six gold, 11 silver and three bronze and Jamaica with four gold, two silver and one bronze.

The 14th edition of the two-yearly global athletics tournament started on 10 Aug.
