The South African government has stripped the citizenship of assassin Janusz Walus, who nearly plunged the country into a full-blown race war on the eve of the country’s first democratic elections.
Walus is currently serving a life sentence for the 1993 assassination of Chris Hani, General Secretary of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the African National Congress.
On March 10, the High Court in Pretoria ruled that Walus should be released on parole. Earlier this month, Justice Minister Michael Masutha introduced an application to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein to overturn the parole. However, in the latest twist in the saga, it appears that Pretoria wants Walus deported to Poland immediately if the court approved his parole bid.
The assassination of Chris Hani took place on Easter Saturday, April 10, 1993, at a time when negotiations to end apartheid were taking place. Police found a hit-list that suggested that Walus also planned to murder Nelson Mandela who swept into power on a ticket of racial reconciliation the following year.
