Libya: 2 Libyan soldiers, on training in Great Britain, jailed for rape

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – Two Libyan soldiers, who are taking part in a military training in Great Britain, have been sentenced by a Cambridge Court to 12 years imprisonment for rape on Saturday.

Mokhtar Ali Saad Mahmoud, 33, and Ibrahim Abou Katila, 23, pleaded guilty at the Cambridge Center in October.

According to a communiqué issued by the British prosecution, “Mahmoud and Abou Katila attacked their victim who was in state of weakness because of the alcohol she took that night and seized the opportunity to perpetrate their crime”.

The two men were taking part in a training in the military base of Basingborn, near Cambridge, within the framework of a programme devoted to the training of Libyan soldiers.

The British authorities had arrested three other soldiers, Khaled al-Aziba, 19, Naji al-Maarafi, 21, and Mohamed Abdoul Salam, 28, who on Wednesday pleaded guilty to charges of theft and sexual assault.

The tribunal sentenced al-Aziba to 12 months imprisonment and the two others to ten months imprisonment.

The British Ministry of Defense decided to suspend the training programme for the Libyan national army after the arrest of the five soldiers.
