Flic en Flac, Mauritius (PANA) – Mauritian Health Minister Lormus Bundhoo says the government is considering the export of doctors to Africa given the significant number of doctors graduating every year in the island.
Speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the 18th annual conference of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) in Flic en Flac, in western Mauritius, Bundhoo said Mauritius had nearly attained the WHO target of one doctor for 600 inhabitants.
“We are training some 300 doctors locally annually and another 300 abroad.” he said.
The Minister announced that he would visit Mozambique next week where he would sign an agreement for the recruitment of Mauritian doctors by Mozambique.
The chairperson of AMCOA, Prof. George Magoha, pointed out that Africa was facing many challenges as far as the health sector was concerned.
These include the scarcity of health professionals, brain drain, the quality of medical education, malpractice and the increase number of litigation.
Around 35 foreign delegates from Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are attending the conference which is organised by the Medical Council of Mauritius and the Dental Council of Mauritius jointly with AMCOA.
The conference ends Friday.
