New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to prevent budget execution during final tax warrant process

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams announced that he plans to prevent the execution of the budget during the final tax warrant process, after the City’s FY21 budget did not include an NYPD hiring freeze or a commitment to true school safety reform.

“Unless it meets those needs, I will use my Charter authority as Public Advocate under Ch. 58, Section 1518, to prevent the budget from being executed during the final tax warrant process,” Williams said.

The two measures include:
• A full hiring freeze for the NYPD within this budget, a freeze which has already been placed on every other city agency, as the Mayor has proposed cutting up to 22,000 existing city jobs.
• A commitment from the Mayor and Council for a just transition away from the current school-safety model over the next year, towards a model truly centered on restorative justice, one that repurposes, redistributes and reimagines public safety in schools.
