Maternal mortality in communities of color discussed at community dialogue in Brooklyn

Birth advocate and reproductive justice activist Shawnee Renee Benton-Gibson hosted a community dialogue on maternal mortality in communities of color in honor of her late daughter Shamony Makeba Gibson on December 19, 2019 at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn.

The event included a libation, artistic performances and a panel discussion with Shamony’s lifetime partner Omari Maynard, Deputy Commissioner of DOHMH Dr. Torian Easterling, therapist Douglass Brooks, Dr. Adwoa Akhu, Dr. Alexia Gaffney, Nonkululeka Tyembe and two other victims of maternal mortality Charles Johnson and Mustafa Shabazz.
